COACHING UPDATE

All Sports develop over time and what was once regarded as a winning formula or style soon becomes countered by players and coaches looking for a way to win.

All Squash enthusiasts will have been aware that “the game” has changed from the old attritional style of the 70’s and 80’s. Newer materials for rackets and strings, a lowering of the tin in professional squash and the introduction of a new scoring system has brought about a change in the way Squash is played at the highest level.

The key word for all players now is EARLY and top players have had to modify their shot production and type of training in order to get to and strike the ball as quickly as possible.

Performance analysis has shown that for every 0.1seonds that the ball is taken earlier the opponent is 25cm further away. Therefore if the ball is struck 0.5 seconds earlier then the opponent is approximately 4 feet further away. So if you’re dwelling on your drop shot and wondering why your opponent is so quick –there’s part of the answer!

So, what’s this got to do with the average club/team player you might ask?

Well you’re using the same rackets as the Pro’s and often the same scoring system (PAR) –so if you want an advantage over your opponent then you need to learn how to modify your game.

Alternatively if you are still playing the old attritional style and your opponent knows about “EARLY” then you are almost certainly in for a hiding.

Apart from EARLY then the most common theme being used at Coaching Seminars is – “if you always do what you always did then you’ll always get what you always got!”

So if you are not getting better results and you are still playing the same old way then it’s time to change!! (or get used to losing)

It’s all in the head!

Well I’m sure you’ve all heard that term about many Sports and it becomes even more true in high intensity Sports like Squash.

As Coaches we will often divide the game into 4 areas – Technical; Tactical; Physical and Mental.

Most Coaches can advise on the first 3 but very few on the last one!

This is regrettable since it leaves a huge potential area for improvement untapped.

However, if you feel that you might benefit from work on your mental approach then please complete this excel spread sheet questionnaire and return to Bob Maison.

Put an x in the box which you feel most appropriate for you in each section. This will enable me to “build” a picture of your Squash personality and its potential strengths and weaknesses.

Help is at hand!

Bob
