After last week's win against a good Haverhill side, this week we went up against Fenland with high hopes. First on court, Kane Astin vs Tim Dean at string 4 showed Tim playing a lot better than the previous half and a tired and unfit Kane couldn't quite keep up with his pace and the match ended 3-0 to Tim despite Kane looking dangerous in the second and third games going ahead and getting game points. On the other court, Mark Longbottom was having a tough time against Paul Kynoch at string 5. I would have said Paul is more like a second division number 3, so Mark put on an incredibly fight, but was bettered by Paul's pace, speed and fitness, going down 3-1. Ohid playing at string 3 in a return game against Paul Scarrow from the first half. Ohid started the match extremely strongly, going up 1-0, but was unable to win the crucial points and after losing the third game 10-9 he was running out of steam and lost it 3-1 in the end. On court one, the number two strings began their battle to hold onto their equal win records, neither having lost a game so far this season - Andrew Dawson vs Andy Short. Taking an early lead, Dawson foolishly relaxed at 8-5 up in the first game, letting Short back into the game to 8-8, before finally taking control and taking the first 10-8. Dawson then promptly fell asleep and threw the second game 9-0! Struggling to regain the lead he then fought back and took the third game, but couldn't quite hold onto the pace, concentration and skill of Short and after a long battle lost 3-2. Last on court was Tom Blair vs Dave Grant, a re-match of their game from the Cambridgeshire County Closed plate, which Tom won 3-1. Tom was confident, but started slowing, losing the first game 9-5. Tom fought back, kept his composure and took the second game 9-7 after a long time battling back and forth. Dave then stepped up a gear and his team mates said that it was the best they had ever seen him play and he took the next two games with some incredibly short and tight drops helping him on the way there. Everyone put up an excellent battle against some extremely good opponents and I would say that the final score of 20-5 to Fenland does not reflect the overall closeness of the match. We wish Fenland the best of luck in their next season in the first division!
